About SRIS
The Science, Research and Innovation Society brings students together to explore ideas, practise what they learn, contribute to research and projects, and share knowledge through practical experience.

Why SRIS exists
SRIS was established by University of Papua New Guinea students who believed that learning should not be confined to lectures, tutorials or laboratory sessions prescribed by a course. Students should also have opportunities to explore ideas independently, practise concepts, work on projects, take part in research and teach what they understand to others. By applying and sharing knowledge, students can strengthen their understanding while developing practical, collaborative and problem-solving skills.
Mission
To create opportunities for students to apply, explore and share scientific knowledge through practical learning, research, projects and collaboration beyond formal coursework.
Vision
A university community where students actively explore knowledge, develop practical capability and contribute ideas, research and innovation that extend beyond the classroom.
What guides us
A short set of commitments that shape how the society runs its projects, practicals and shared learning.
Turn concepts into practical experience through experimentation, projects and application.
Strengthen learning by explaining ideas, methods and discoveries to others
Give students room to investigate interests and questions that extend beyond prescribed academic content.
Bring students together across scientific disciplines to exchange skills, perspectives and ideas.
Encourage research, projects and innovation that develop useful knowledge and practical capability.
Our journey

2023
Science students and faculty advisors founded SRIS to give scientific research and innovation at UPNG a home of its own.
Early 2024
The first laboratory practical sessions and workshops put classroom theory into hands-on practice.
Mid 2024
Membership grew across several science departments, and the society's first collaborative research projects got under way.
