Can local PNG crops hold the key to a plastic-free future?

Join us for an exciting presentation, at our fifth laboratory session of the 2026 academic year, hosted by the UPNG SRIS and the Biological Sciences Divisional members as we answer this question and discover how local resources like sweet potato starch, coconut husk fibre, bamboo husk fibre, and betel-nut skin fibre are being transformed into biodegradable bioplastics.

What You Will Learn:

• How starch matrices are combined with natural fibre reinforcement to create eco-friendly plastic films.
• The potential of PNG's native agricultural crops in sustainable material innovation.
• The scientific processes driving local, green solutions for environmental conservation.

Laboratory Session Details:

 Date: 12th September
Time: 10:00 AM
Venue: Room S301
Presenters: Shawnnah Daniel, Ricky Lita, & Maxie Gibson

Come along, support our biology researchers, and see how PNG is innovating for a sustainable future!
See you there!

Note: This laboratory session will follow immediately after the fourth laboratory session titled as the, " A Presentation on Aquifers - The Water Beneath Us, The Life Within Us" , after the UPNG SRIS Earth Sciences Divisional members at 9am.
